10 a day? How to get fruit and veg into your diet with out trying

So news hit yesterday that to lengthen your life span, it is recommended for you to have up your 5 a day to 10 fruit and vegetables every day. Which sounds very intimidating if you don’t have many anyway, so I thought I would give you a couple tips to help get to 10.

I like to buy my favourite fruit and veg every week. I don’t venture into new ones to often because I know that eating enough doesn’t come natural to me. What I would recommend is to sit down and write down every fruit and veg you like/love. Don’t worry if it isn’t in season. This is my list if you need a little help:

  • Parsnips
  • Courgettes
  • Tomatoes
  • Red onion
  • Spring onion
  • Spinach
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Carrots
  • Sweetcorn
  • Leeks

You can see there that is more than enough veg. For fruit I love:

  • Mango
  • Watermelon
  • Apples
  • Raisin
  • Grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Cherries
  • Strawberries
  • Pears
  • Bananas

All of these fruits and vegetables can be found in most supermarkets (in the U.K.) all year round. Pick 5 off of each list and start there. If you don’t like vegetables as much fruit then start with fruit. Fruit is very good for you and it’s a great place to start due to the sweetness.

If you like juices and smoothies then put vegetables into them. Add something sweet like half a mango to cover the taste. You don’t need to taste it for your body to benefit from it and don’t forget, you can always buy orange juice or apple juice ect if you don’t like it in its whole form. It is better for you if you make it yourself due to no added sugar, but buying is better than nothing.

Research and find recipies that cover the taste if you really can’t stomach the taste. However, do try and give it a go. You only need to taste something a couple of times before you will start to like it. If you live with someone and they love say, spinach, and they have it for their dinner, just ask if you could try some, every time they have it with their food keep trying, I’m sure they won’t mind, it will also mean there won’t be a waste and it will save you some money!

If you would like to know what counts as a portion then head over to BBC Goodfood. Try and eat the rainbow. Try and make your plate look really colourful and pretty, it will make you want to eat it!

I hope this was some what helpful. If you have any questions then comment below and I will do my best to answer.
